IKEA's rich and successful history began with its founding in Sweden in 1943. Since then the company has opened stores in 39 countries of the world, proving its exceptional popularity and quality service. The first IKEA store in the Czech Republic was opened in Prague in 1991 in the DBK shopping centre at the Budějovická Metro station. Currently, there are four stores in the Czech Republic, two of which are in Prague. The guiding principle of IKEA is to sell designer furniture at low prices that are acceptable to the general public. To achieve this goal, customers assemble their purchased furniture at home, thereby saving the company the costs of assembling the individual furniture pieces and then transporting these large pieces. The transportation of unassembled furniture is easier, and that positively affects final product prices. All the furniture is designed by IKEA's own designers and produced at its own factories.
In 2005, IKEA approached 40 up-and-coming designers to design its new products.
